Newmarket Handicap
The Newmarket Handicap is a Group 1 thoroughbred race held over a distance of 1200 metres. The race is held in February or March each year at the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne with a total prize money of A$1.0 million.
The Newmarket Handicap forms part of the Melbourne autumn racing carnival and is considered to be Australia’s premier sprint race.
The Newmarket Handicap is permitted to start a field of 24 horses, the only other race at Flemington allowed to start 24 horse is the Melbourne Cup.
Due to the high stakes of the race it is sure to attract a competitive field of horse’s with some of the best trainers looking on in the background.
